Explore Montignac-Charente on your French Holiday

Be sure to explore Montignac-Charente on your French holiday. Montignac-Charente is situated in the Poitou- Charente region in the south west of France.

Montignac is a bustling little village with the opportunity to experience everyday life in rural France. It has a daily fruit and veg market which also sells seafood on the weekends; numerous shops including a bakery, butcher and tabac;  a post office, tourist office, bank, hairdresser, restaurant and bar. The fish man comes to the village square every Wednesday morning and a pizza van visits the nearby village of Vars on Saturday evenings. At the Hippodrome on the outskirts of the village there are horse races in the summer and there is also the opportunity for horse riding. Overlooking the village is the Donjon, the remains of a medieval fortress.

There is a supermarket and pharmacy close by in the next village of St Amant de Boixe where you will also find a medieval benedictine abbey with a lovely restaurant for lunch or dinner.

The surrounding country side offers a unique and varied environment for walkers and cyclists. Exploring the course of the river Charente itself is popular and offers opportunities for boat trips, canoe adventures and the chance to quietly enjoy the countryside. From Angouleme, the river can be navigated by larger boats but at Montignac, which is upstream from Angouleme, the river is much smaller and calmer, splitting into smaller meandering rivulets and areas of ponds and small lakes.

There is a bus route to Angouleme 15 km south which is the capital of the Charente department. Angouleme is a small but cosmopolitan city with a variety of shops, a covered food market, cultural areas and railway station. The cobbled streets are charming and there are many restaurants and bars.
